I think it’s really unfair that New Year’s Day fell on a Tuesday this year. How are you supposed to start any type of resolution or new fitness plan when the week is like.. already over? Tuesday is basically Friday so you might as well just wait until Monday. If you think that this sounds like an excuse to stretch a case of holiday laziness on for a few more days… you my friends, are exactly right.
But hey, it’s all in the past now. Here’s to assuming that you are like me, and that you took advantage of the mid-week New Year’s grace period. This workout and green smoothie combo will have you feeling fresh and recharged- like you’ve been doing this whole “New Year” thing for days!
5 miles in 40 minutes Treadmill Interval Workout.
Knock out a quick 5 miles with this treadmill routine. I HATE running indoors and I can’t wait for some warmer weather to return. I love this treadmill plan because it is not the least bit boring, and you smash through miles super fast! [Adjust speeds and time to your own preference and level. Try a walking interval routine- the key is to get your heart rate up! High intensity intervals paired with short recovery periods will help to boost your metabolism]
Replenish your body with this smoothie. I have one almost every day of my life. If you are weirded out by the spinach-in-my-drink thing, get over it. It’s good for you, and when its mixed with the right fruit you will not even taste it. I swear!
Lean & Green Smoothie
You will need:
- Frozen [or fresh] fruit of choice: my favorites are strawberries and mango and banana. [ The only time that I like banana]
- Greek yogurt
- Milk : I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
- Any add-ins that you like. I tend to blend in some ground flax seed, maybe a squeeze of honey or agave, a scoop of oats, etc. If I am drinking this after a workout I will throw in a scoop of protein powder. The choice is all yours!
First of all, I must share with you the Spinach secret that I found on Pinterest yesterday. I was literally brimming with excitement like a kid on Christmas Eve. I was excited about Spinach. I probably should get out more.
Sure, you can just blend in some spinach each time you make your smoothies. Or you can do a big batch at once and freeze it into cubes. Genius!! I love this because I always found myself wasting some of the bag, and it takes up a lot of room in the fridge. This also comes in handy if you are not using any frozen fruit. Blend up a bag of spinach with a little water to get it started, pour into trays, freeze, and you are set!
Also- unless you are buying Trader Joe’s Frozen Mango chunks…. [they are approximately three bucks for a huge bag of perfectly frozen mango which I buy in mass amounts like a hoarder]….I suggest that you freeze your own on sale/ seasonal fruit. The trick to freezing strawberries? Dry them and slice them up; lay them out on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer for a few hours. They will freeze up individually and not in huge clumps as they would when frozen in a bag.
Oh ya- Sorry, the smoothie. This makes two servings:
3-4 cubes of frozen spinach [about 1/4 of a bag], 3/4 cup frozen sliced strawberries, 3/4 cup frozen mango chunks, 1/2 cup greek yogurt, one cup of milk.
Blend all ingredients together. Drink up. Tackle the day. Feel amazing. That’s all.
